Sep 21 - World Peace Day Celebrations At Loreto Convent School
Loreto Convent School celebrated the International Day of Peace today.
The United Nations has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. To recognise the bringing togetherness religious leaders were invited to attend, these included Bishop Carmel Zammit and Monsignor Paul Bear – Catholic Church; Canon Gordon Reid and Reverend Robin Gill- Church of England; Imams – Bakkali Kasmi Abderrahman, Abdessamad El Mokalfi and his wife, Kaoila El Andaloussi; John Byrne – Methodist Church; Mrs Deepa Aidasani – Hindu Temple, and Mrs Fiona Young - Baha’i Faith, were in attendance at the school. The theme for 2017 is “Together for Peace: Respect, Safety and Dignity for All.”
The theme honours the spirit of TOGETHER, a global initiative that promotes respect, safety and dignity for everyone. This year, the International Day of Peace will focus on engaging and mobilizing people throughout the world to show support for refugees and migrants. Its messages will be shared with communities hosting refugees and migrants as well as people concerned that refugees and migrants may bring physical and economic insecurity to their lives.
The day will highlight solidarity with refugees and migrants and showcase the shared benefits of migration to economies and nations, while also acknowledging legitimate concerns of host communities. Ultimately, it will be about bringing people together and reminding them of their common humanity.
Young people will have a vital role to play. Pupils at Loreto Convent have learned about purpose of World Peace Day. Pupils from year read Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Christian prayers. The school has its very own Peace Pole, this contains the message “May peace prevail on earth” in several different languages. The pupils then attached multi-coloured ribbons to the peace pole, each ribbon containing a different message of peace.
