Mar 16 - Bayside Students Present Ocean Plastics Exhibition

A group of nine Bayside students have successfully completed their COPE course, run through the Alternative Learning Centre.

Their work is the culmination of a project-based learning course, which began in September 2017, and is currently on display at the Department of Education.

The course allows the students to earn a certificate based on activities and coursework that allows them to complete a real-life project.

The students are:

The students undertook research on ocean plastics and the environment over the course of several months as part of broader challenges, which allowed them to develop their group work, research, data collection and presentation skills.

Their practical tasks required them to conduct interviews and questionnaires with school staff regarding the importance of recycling, visit the Alameda Gardens on a field trip and carry out research on Sky News’ Ocean Rescue campaign.

The exhibition allows them to bring their work together and present it though a creative outlet, using a variety of formats including data presentation and artwork.

Explaining the group’s work at the exhibition, Lee De Soto said: ‘I enjoyed bringing all of our work together for the exhibition and I think we all did a good job’.

Their teachers, who have guided them through the course, emphasized the importance of the different approach to learning: “This practical, project-based work is an important way of promoting motivation and engagement in the learning process for students who haven’t found traditional learning processes easy to follow. Their path is equally as valuable and the quality of this exhibition clearly demonstrates this.”
