A Recipient’s Experience

By Mr Nobert Nicholas Sene MBE

On 21st November 2018, I attended Buckingham Palace for the investiture of my MBE, awarded at the Queen’s Birthday 2018 Honours back in June. I will describe my experience from the onset. When His Excellency the Governor telephoned me and said, “I have been instructed by Her Majesty The Queen that she wishes to award you the MBE for your services
to Gibraltar, will you accept it”? I was speechless and very humbled; and naturally, I accepted. It was very difficult to keep to myself, but I was told not to announce it until the official announcement, which back then was just over 3 weeks’ time. I must reiterate, it was very difficult to keep to myself, but I persevered.

My family and friends were delighted with the official announcement, and I received many warm congratulations. I later then received a letter informing me that the Investiture was to be held at Buckingham Palace, so off we went to London.

On arrival at Buckingham Palace, my family went to sit in the Ballroom where the ceremony was being held, while I was ushered to a separate room where all the recipients met. In the waiting room, we were informed that HRH Prince Charles would conduct the Investitures, what the order of service was, and given instructions on how the ceremony would proceed calling small groups of recipients at a time. Whilst waiting, I got the opportunity to meet some truly deserving people with very interesting stories of achievement.

It was a very special and overwhelming experience to receive my MBE from HRH Prince Charles, who was very interested in the work I did. We each had his undivided attention and the opportunity for a short conversation with him. I was very proud to represent Gibraltar at the ceremony.

It has been a truly proud yet humbling experience but I have to thank my family especially my wife for supporting me in the work I have done.
