On International Women’s Day unite's Equalities Committee says that it is of great importance that the commemoration of this day "does not end up as a simple press release".

A spokesperson said: "This Committee recognises that even today there is a grave discrepancy in employment between men and women and therefore we need to create #Balanceforbetter. This goes beyond mere words and simple gestures on the part of Unions, Governments and political parties.

"Unite therefore calls for real measures to be taken and tangible change that will truly make a difference between now and next year’s celebration of International Women’s Day. This time next year we will make an assessment."
