Jun 03 - Government Hits Back At GSD Over Beach Comments

The Government says the GSD are "embarrassed" when reminded of their time in Government in relation to the state of the beaches.

A statement from the Government follows below:

This is very clear from the latest statement they have issued about the provision of disabled access to our beaches.

The unshakeable truth is that when in Government the GSD did not provide for disabled access to our beaches at all. It is easy to forget that it was this Government that made sure that this important part of our community was able to enjoy the beaches like everyone else.

There has been no lack of planning at all. Instead, what happened is that, despite the planning, the contractor’s vehicle developed a mechanical issue, which prevented the timely provision of access for persons with mobility issues. This is nobody’s fault.

Indeed, this year the beaches have been readied for use as far as possible, even with lifeguards, outside the official bathing season.

The GSD Opposition may very well NOW say that they would ready the beaches by May. The reality is that they never did this in Government. Moreover, in recent times the beaches have already been prepared BEFORE May to take account of persons going to the beach during Easter in good weather.
