A statement from the Gibraltar Heritage Trust follows below:
The Gibraltar Heritage Trust is proud to launch a new book titled, ‘Me Acuerdo: Memories of Gibraltar’s Old Town’ which includes recollections and stories from older members of our community who grew up in Gibraltar’s Old Town between the 1950s and 70s. This project has been led by the Trust’s Admin & Support Assistant Rebecca Fa, who conducted interviews in February 2024 and has transcribed them for publication. In March 2024, we hosted a Sketch Safari in collaboration with The Rock Retreat inviting artists to sketch in the Old Town and hear stories from the interviews conducted. Many of the artworks produced feature in the book.
The second part of this project has been partly supported with a grant from Gibraltar Cultural Services. What began as a passion project has grown into a significant piece of oral history and adds to the wider Gibraltar story, preserving our past for generations to come. The vision for this book was also brought to life by local designer and illustrator Beatrice Garcia.
The audios are available for listening on our website www.gibraltarheritagetrust.org.g
The book was launched by Gibraltar Heritage Trust Chairman, Ian Balestrino, at The Main Guard with participants and artists present. The book is available to purchase at the Gibraltar Heritage Trust Bookshop and our website, and other bookshops.
