BookGem will be hosting the presentation of the novel En el corazón de África by María Jesús Corrales. The event will take place on Thursday 12th March at 5pm at BookGem.

BookGem, Gibraltar's bookstore and cafe, will be the place to the official presentation of the captivating novel, En el corazón de África in Gibraltar. The event will take place on Thursday, March 12th, at 5:00 PM at the BookGem location, Main Street, 312, Gibraltar. The event is sponsored by the Gibraltar Culture Services. 

En el corazón de África, by the journalist and author María Jesús Corrales, is a gripping tale of women identity, love, memory and freedom. The book explores the links between the borders of the Strait and the important role of women at key moments in the recent history of the entire area. 
 
The novel main character, África Martín, is an unsuccessful freelance journalist in Brexit-era London. Following the death of her grandmother, Inmaculada Márquez, during the pandemic, embarks on an inner journey searching her identity and opening the door to a troubled and difficult past. The situation will cause a profound family catharsis and will take her from the streets of London to both shores of the Strait of Gibraltar.

That catarsis will help her to break physical borders and to cross the frontiers of her soul. It will also restore the memory of thousands of anonymous women, from the past and the present, who have been an example in building the foundations of freedom and civil rights in today’s society.

Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from the author, María Jesús Corrales, during a brief reading and presentation, followed by a book signing.
 
About the presentation in Gibraltar, Mrs Corrales said: "This is a very special moment for me, as Gibraltar and the Campo are always a real inspiration in my writings. Above all, because of their resilient people and their shared stories from both sides of the border." 
 
"I feel privileged to have found such stories from great women during the 20th century. Women that helped us very much in reaching all the rights we have today. We owe a big debt to those women and this novel is a special gift for them."
