Gibraltar National Archives Launches Call For Public Submissions For “Gibraltar At The United Nations 1946–2026” Exhibition

The Gibraltar National Archives have announced their forthcoming exhibition, “Gibraltar at the United Nations 1946–2026”, which will open at the Fine Arts Gallery from 14th September to 2nd October.

A statement from Government follows below:

The Gibraltar National Archives is pleased to announce its forthcoming exhibition, “Gibraltar at the United Nations 1946–2026”, which will open at the Fine Arts Gallery from 14th September to 2nd October 2026.

The exhibition will mark the 80th anniversary of Gibraltar’s listing as a Non-Self-Governing Territory at the United Nations in 1946. It will explore Gibraltar’s long-standing relationship with the United Nations, the development of Gibraltar’s political voice on the international stage, and the generations of Gibraltarians who have lived through, contributed to, and carried forward this important chapter of our history.

Since 1946, Gibraltar’s story at the United Nations has been one of endurance, democratic expression and the continuing assertion of the wishes of its people. From the post-war years, through the closed frontier generation, to the present day, Gibraltar’s journey before the United Nations has been shaped not only by Governments and public representatives, but also by the lived experiences of ordinary Gibraltarians.

The Gibraltar National Archives is therefore making an official call for public submissions to form part of this exhibition.

Members of the public are invited to contact the GNA if they have any material or personal recollections relevant to Gibraltar at the United Nations between 1946 and 2026, including:

photographs;

documents;

letters;

newspaper cuttings;

campaign material;

personal memories;

family stories;

objects or physical material connected to Gibraltar’s UN journey.

The GNA is particularly keen to hear from members of the community whose families, work, public service, activism, travel, memories or personal experiences connect in any way with Gibraltar’s presence at the United Nations, the frontier years, constitutional development, self-determination, or Gibraltar’s international representation.

The Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia, said: “This exhibition will tell the story of Gibraltar’s 80-year journey at the United Nations. It is a story of resilience, democratic expression and the determination of the Gibraltarian people to have their voice heard.

“But that story does not belong only in official records or Government archives. It belongs to the whole community. Many families in Gibraltar will have photographs, documents, memories or personal experiences which form part of that wider national story.

“I would therefore encourage members of the public to come forward and share any material they may have. Their contributions will help ensure that this exhibition reflects not only the constitutional and political history of Gibraltar at the United Nations, but also the lived experience of the people whose rights, identity and future have been at the heart of that journey.”

The closing date for submissions is Friday 17th July 2026.
