Gibraltar Attends Commonwealth Foundation Board Of Governors Meeting In London

Gibraltar was represented at a meeting of the Commonwealth Foundation Board in London.

A statement from the Government follows below:

The central role of civil society was at the heart of a meeting this week of the Board of Governors of the Commonwealth Foundation.

Gibraltar’s Representative to the United Kingdom, Jonathan Scott, joined representatives of Commonwealth Governments and High Commissioners based in London.

The Commonwealth Foundation works to advance the interests of civil society across the global network of 56 independent member countries and territories. The meeting was held at Marlborough House, the headquarters of the Commonwealth.

The Board met to begin shaping the Foundation’s priorities for the next five years, to 2031, and to take stock of the projects delivered in the strategic period now drawing to a close.

In her introduction to the Foundation’s Report of Impact and Change for 2021–2026, the Chair of the Board, Her Excellency Winnie Anna Kiap CBE, described how the Foundation has grown into a champion for civil society over the past five years, concentrating its efforts on three issues: health justice, climate justice and freedom of expression.

Gibraltar is a fully paid-up associate member of the Commonwealth Foundation. The meeting was Mr Scott’s first formal engagement with the Board since taking up his role eight months ago.

The Deputy Chief Minister, the Hon Dr Joseph Garcia CMG MP, said: “Gibraltar may be small, but we are proud and active members of the Commonwealth family. Our membership of the Commonwealth Foundation allows us to contribute to the issues that civil society cares about, and to share ideas with partners around the world.

“As the Foundation looks ahead to 2031, I am pleased that Jonathan Scott was there in London to represent Gibraltar. These connections broaden our horizons and remind us that, however small our territory, our friendships extend across the globe.”
