Philippa Beale Presented Cultural Award

Philippa Beale has been presented with a Special Recognition Cultural Award by the Ministry of Culture.

A statement from GCS follows below:

Curator and artist Philippa Beale was recently in Gibraltar for the opening and events relating to the Traces of Humanity project, organised by Gibraltar Cultural Services (GCS) on behalf of the Ministry of Culture.

At a reception held at the Mayors Parlour, Philippa Beale was presented by the Minister for Culture, The Honourable Christian Santos, with a Special Recognition Cultural Award in acknowledgement of her outstanding contribution to the promotion of Gibraltar, its art and artists on an international stage.

Philippa has been an invaluable partner, working closely with GCS to ensure that Gibraltar’s talent and product reaches audiences beyond our shores. Together, they have delivered remarkable projects, including two exhibitions at Bermondsey in London, the major exhibition Being With Trees, and most recently Traces of Humanity culminating in exhibitions in Margate, the West End, and in Gibraltar.

Beyond exhibitions, Philippa has also played a pivotal role in exploring opportunities to develop studio spaces here in Gibraltar, inspired by successful models in Woolwich, an initiative that could shape the future of our creative community on the Rock.

The Minister for Culture, The Honourable Christian Santos GMD MP said:

‘With the support of the Cultural Awards Board, it gives me a great pleasure to recognise Philippa Beale, for her unwavering commitment to Gibraltar’s cultural landscape and her unrelenting support for our artists over more than a decade.

She has been instrumental in supporting the Governments vision, in exporting and promoting our art abroad. Her vision, dedication and commitment have seen Gibraltar placed on the international map through numerous projects strengthening cultural links between the Rock and the wider art world.’
