Nov 21 - New Local Book Focuses on Iberian Wildlife Throughout the 19th Century

bookAuthors Clive, Geraldine and Stewart Finlayson have written a new book centred around the 19th Century. The authors’ book lavishly illustrated by their own phtoographs, uses texts written by 19th Century British naturalists and retraces their footsteps through scientific discovery and exploration, over a century later.

The Finlaysons follow two naturalists based in Gibraltar – Lt Col. Howard Irby and Lt. Col. Willoughby Verner, as well as two others based in Jerez (Abel Chapman and Walter Buck). The text discusses how it was this British influence that opened up the beauty and richness of the Iberian countryside to the outside world.

The book encompasses impressive image of landscapes and animals and has taken over four years to produce. Published by Santana Books, specialists in English language books aimed at visitors to the Iberian Peninsula, the story is a sad one of loss through human activity. However, positive messages of conservation having reversed negative trends are also covered in the book.
