Nov 21 - Defenders Urge the Public to Support Pons Following EU Flag Arrest
The Defender of Gibraltar this morning attended the Magistrates Court in support of Julio Pons, of the Voice of Gibraltar Group, as he answered to charges relating to yesterday’s incident at the Frontier that saw him cut the rope, holding up the EU Flag.
The Defenders explained today that the matter was adjourned to the 13th December without any pleas being entered. They encourage members of the public to support Julio and attend the case at 10am on the morning of the 13th of December.
The pressure group believes that the attending Magistrate was excessive in his request for a bail of £500. They note, ‘in our opinion Julio should have been bailed to his own recognizance. We believe that there is a real and tangible risk that Julio will be used as a scapegoat in order to deter further peaceful acts of democratic protest’.
‘We also believe that it is time for the people of Gibraltar to unite and show their contempt of the recent EU Ruling in favour of Spain by, if possible, attending the Demonstration at the Spanish Embassy in London on the Saturday, 30th November’.
