Nov 22 - Sir John Inaugurates Major Philanthropy Conference

john major Gibraltar’s inaugural philanthropic event, hosted by the Philanthropy Forum, was launched by former Prime Minister, Sir John Major, at a dinner event held in the Airport’s Wessex Lounge on Monday. Sir John is the Senior Advisor to Credit Suisse who, along with EY, Hassans and Isolas, founded the Forum earlier this year. Other attendees included the Chief Minister and Education Minister Gilbert Licudi.

Commenting on the matter, Trino Cruz of Credit Suisse claimed that the group believes private philanthropy has an increasingly important role to play in society. He added, ‘the Forum will seek to bring together entrepreneurs, philanthropists and philanthropy specialists, particularly from Gibraltar and the UK, to encourage them to share their valuable insight and experience.

‘Many of our jurisdiction’s top professionals have for many years been supporting their clients in their philanthropic endeavours and in so doing we have learnt that there is much that we can do from Gibraltar to assist. We were delighted to welcome Sir John to Gibraltar and thank him for opening the conference for us.’

Peter Montegriffo of Hassans insisted that they hoped the conference, which saw addresses made by Sir John Major, Kasuma Trust CEO Dr. Balwant Singh, would become an annual event. He explained that their main aim this year was to bring to Gibraltar leading professionals and industry leaders who could share their wisdom and experience with attendees.

Among the topics covered by Tuesday’s conference were responsible long-term investment strategies, sustainable returns from ethical investments and the Forbes report on alleviating global poverty. The conference, held at the Convent, was opened by Gilbert Licudi and attended by around 60 invited delegates.
