Dec 06 - Gibraltar Welcomes Its New Governor
Lt Gen Sir James Dutton and Lady Dutton arrived this morning in Gibraltar aboard HMS Bulwark. This continues the long tradition of new Governors arriving in Gibraltar by Royal Navy vessel. Interim Governor Alison MacMillan and her husband Mr Lee together with the Chief Minister and Mrs Picardo welcomed them as they disembarked and set foot on Gibraltar soil. The Royal Gibraltar Regiment fired a 17-gun Salute.
Sir James was accompanied into Parliament by the Speaker to meet members of both sides of the House. The Clerk read out the Royal Commission as a Proclamation and the Chief Justice administered the Oaths.
Both Mr Picardo and the Leader of the Opposition Mr Feetham welcomed the new Governor and gave short speeches on the current political challenges that Gibraltar faces. The new Governor, before exiting Parliament, was handed the Keys to the City.
His Excellency and Lady Dutton then proceeded to the City Hall for a reception hosted by the Chief Minister.
This afternoon, His Excellency and Lady Dutton will leave City Hall together with the Chief Minister and Mrs Picardo and walk along Main Street. There will be a final RG Guard turned out at the Convent for the arrival of His Excellency.
