Jan 08 - Second Year of School Children’s Gardening Club

ygtvFollowing the great success of their educational Edible Bed, which was created last year by a group of children from Bishop Fitzgerald Middle School, the Gibraltar Botanic Gardens will be running another after-school Gardening Club at The Alameda from January 2014.  The Gardening Club will be open to middle school children (8-12 year olds) and will run on Tuesdays afternoons from 4pm until 5pm, starting on January 28th 2014.  It will be based in the Natural Learning Centre at The Alameda.

The children will create biodegradable pots and scarecrows as well as planting seeds and cuttings and preparing a bed for planting, before planting out and tending the bed later in the year.  The scheme acts as a wonderful opportunity for any child who is interested in plants and gardening, and who loves the outdoors.

Spaces will be limited to a maximum of 12 children.  Although there is no charge for the club, given the limited numbers, a good level of commitment is required. Any child who does not attend for more than 2 consecutive weeks without good reason will lose their place in the club to someone on the waiting list.

There will be a sign-up day held on Tuesday 14th Jan between 4pm & 5pm, outside The Alameda Garden Shop by the George Don Gates (Grand Parade).  This will be the only opportunity to sign up unless all places are not filled. On registration, a permission form (which can be requested in advance by email from This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or collected from the shop prior to the day) must be signed by a parent or responsible adult.

A spokesperson for the Gardens commented, ‘we are really looking forward to seeing what this year's gardening club will produce, especially after last year's resounding success. If any adults are interested in helping out at the Gardening club on a regular basis, please contact us via This email address is being protected from spambots.
