Apr 08 - Promotions Within the City Fire Brigade

fire fighter promotions With effect from 21 March, six personnel from the City Fire Brigade have been promoted in the Operations Department arising from vacancies in the posts.

Sub Officer Brian Mañasco has been promoted to the rank of Station Officer and as such will now lead the White Watch as their watch commander. Station Officer Mañasco joined the service in January 1986; he was promoted to Leading Firefighter in June 2000 and to Sub Officer in August of 2007. He is also a Graduate of the Institution of Fire Engineers.

Leading Firefighter Fabian Olivera has been promoted to Sub Officer and will be taking up this post in the Red Watch. He joined the service in January 1996 and was promoted to Leading Firefighter in December 2006. He is the officer in charge of Fire Hydrants and the Upper Rock Emergency Water Supplies; he is also responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the Incident Support Unit (ISU) and is a Rope Rescue Instructor.

Leading Firefighter George Burns has been promoted to Sub Officer and will be taking up this post in the Blue Watch. He joined the service in October of 2001 and was promoted to Leading Firefighter in June 2011. Sub Officer Burns is the officer in charge of Radio Communications equipment and their maintenance. He is also a Diving Instructor, and officer in charge of diving equipment and a semi-rigid RHIB vessel.

Firefighter Christian Desoiza has been promoted to Leading Firefighter and is to take up his post in the Blue Watch. He joined the service in September of 2001. He is currently a Breathing Apparatus Maintenance Technician.

Firefighter Nicholas Poggio has been promoted to Leading Firefighter and will take up his post in the Red Watch. He joined the service in September 2003. He is currently a Breathing Apparatus Maintenance Technician and is also the officer in charge of Ladders and Small Gear.

Firefighter Karl Sciortino has been promoted to Leading Firefighter and will take up his post in White Watch. He joined the service in January 2007. He was awarded the Silver Axe for obtaining the best result in his Foundation Training Course at the Fire Service College. He is also a qualified ambulance first responder trainer.
