Apr 09 - Princess Caroline's Battery To Be Re-Opened For Easter

A part of the Upper Rock which has been closed to the public for many years will be re-opened in time for the Easter weekend.

A number of picnic tables and seats, as well as litter bins, have been provided near to the area which is usually commonly known as 'Princess Caroline's Battery', although it is actually made up of Princess Anne's and Princess Amelia's batteries. The area has also been tidied up and cleaned.

At a time when more and more Gibraltar residents are spending their spare time on the Rock, the Department for the Environment and the Gibraltar Tourist Board have worked together to make the site available this spring.

In order to maximise safety and to allow more open areas for the use of the public, cars will not be allowed inside the area, but parking spaces will be available on the two roads above which lead to the Great Siege Tunnels and Farringdon's Battery.

The public is asked to look after the site and keep it clean. Users should be aware that, as over much of the Upper Rock, care should be taken in the proximity of cliffs and other steep drops.

Minister for the Environment, Dr John Cortes, commented, "I am really pleased that we have been able to give this traditional picnic site back to the public. It is one of many steps we are taken to improve facilities and accessibility to the Upper Rock so that people can enjoy the open area and get to appreciate the rich natural heritage of our countryside."

Minister for Tourism, Neil Costa, said, "This is the perfect example of how closely the Tourism and Environment teams are working together to improve the facilities within the Nature Reserve, not only for our enjoyment but for that of our visitors too. This is just one of many projects that are a testament to the Government's resolve to improve and promote our natural history, heritage and tourist product in an unprecedented manner."
