Jun 26 - International Day Against Drug Abuse Marked with Care Agency Improvements

international day against drug abuse Today marks the UN's International Day Against Drug Abuse, aimed at highlighting the issues surrounding drug abuse and raising awareness of the dangers. This year’s theme is ‘ A message of hope; drug use disorders are preventable and treatable’.

The Gibraltar Government marks the day by noting that they are focusing on ensuring that the essential components and services are in place to make drug rehabilitation treatment available to all who may require it.

The administration claims that considerable investment has been made to the fabric of Bruce’s Farm, in both the monetary sense and through the centre’s operations.

A No.6 spokesman commenting on the matter said, ‘we are working with other organisations in the UK with proven records of good practice to enhance the services that we deliver. The aim of the Government is to provide a welcoming and comfortable therapeutic environment at Bruce's Farm so as to make it more conducive to successful recovery.

‘Education and prevention programmes are just as essential as the treatment of drug addiction. The Government, through the Care Agency, in conjunction with the Royal Gibraltar Police have developed a robust programme for the youth working with local schools and holding regular lectures on the risks of drugs, as well as arranging various sporting events to raise awareness. We are particularly grateful for the involvement by recovering addicts in this programme so that children can hear first- hand of the dangers of drugs. This successful programme has already reached out to thousands of children.’

The Care Agency has recently seen the addition of a counselor dedicated solely to outreach work, including drugs counseling for those currently in Prison.

Samantha Sacramento, Minister for Social Services noted that a lot of work in the area still needs to be carried out, but the Government is working on preventative measures and awareness campaigns, particularly with young people.

She added, ‘Working with the community is important and the support network provided by organisations such as Narcotics Anonymous and Families Anonymous is invaluable, I am very grateful for all who give of their time to help. We now look forward to also working together with 'Stay Clean' a band new charity that has just been established. We must all aim to live in a society that is free from drugs and the problems associated with it.’
