Nov 13 - Casemates Archaeological Remains Reveal Layers Of Local History
13 November 2014
Works for the construction of a new building next to Burger King on Casemates Square have uncovered archaeological remains from the 13th century.
The remains include a well and cistern belonging to what is believed to have been a Spanish house. In addition to this, there is evidence of further building on higher layers dating from the 19th century. Interestingly, there is also a “destruction layer” which includes debris from the heavy fighting that occurred during the Great Siege of 1782.
Although the discovery comes too late in the building process for anything of heritage value to be salvaged, the developers, Admiral Bridge Investments Limited, were keen to secure a detailed historical record of the site.
