Dec 01 - Today Is World Aids Day

World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.

Globally an estimated 34 million people have HIV. More than 35 million people have died from the virus, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history. Despite this, HIV and AIDS are much less in the public eye than, for example Ebola, even though AIDS has been a much greater killer.

Minister for Health, Dr John Cortes, said, "Today we remember those friends who have lost their lives to AIDS, and all those others around the world who still, although sometimes forgotten, live with the disease. We must remain aware of the risks and continue to fight against it."

Friends for Life and the Health Promotion and Public Health team of the GHA will be at the ICC today between 10am and 2pm to raise public awareness about HIV.
