Dec 04 - Gibraltar Youth Forum Gives Young People A Voice

The Gibraltar Youth Service has started a new pilot project that aims to reach out to all young people from a cross section of our community. This is in line with the Government policy of listening to young people and giving them a voice on all issues that concern our society. The scheme has been opened to adult members from the Youth Advisory Council and representatives from other youth groups including various disadvantaged groups and the Unite the Union Youth Section that had previously had no representation in any youth forums.

The Gibraltar Youth Service is reaching out to more young people who have come together from various Non-Governmental Organisations, both Secondary Schools and the Gibraltar College of Further Education to set up and represent the newly formed ‘Gibraltar Youth Forum.’ The overall objective, say the organisers, is to “give young people the voice in our community that they deserve.” Members of the Gibraltar Youth Forum recently met with the Minister for Youth, Steven Linares, and discussed issues of concern affecting young people in Gibraltar.

The Minister was very pleased with the depth of the topics the group raised which included issues such as education and health and he praised them for their work and, above all, their participation. The group will start working together in January 2015 with the GYPT (Gibraltar Youth Production Team) to explore joint up projects they can work on that could serve them with new learning and personal development opportunities.
