Jan 07 – Gibraltar Archives To Feature Oral Histories Of The Evacuation

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the wartime evacuation, Gibraltar’s Archives will soon be enhanced by audio tracks recorded by people with first-hand experience of such an important time in Gibraltar’s history. These oral histories will complement the Archives’ evacuation project that was launched earlier this year.

The audio tracks will be readily available via a link to: www.nationalarchives.gi/gna/EvacAudio1.aspx or via the Evacuation tab on the main menu.

In total, 27 evacuees’ testimonies are available on-line. As each track plays, it will be linked to a relevant wartime poster and the audio archive will feature songs of the period sung by children from St Joseph’s school.

‘Since we started the Evacuation project in October, we have received many messages of congratulation and support,’ said Anthony Pitaluga, the Government Archivist.

’These oral histories are important record of that time,’ he added.

‘I am delighted with the way in which this project is developing,’ said the Deputy Chief Minister, Dr Joseph Garcia.

‘I am particularly grateful to the Archivist for making these historic recordings available to a wide audience.’
