Feb 12 - Heritage Trust Praises Ocean Views Renovation
The Trustees of the Gibraltar Heritage Trust were invited to visit the new facilities at Ocean Views (ex-RNH) prior to the official opening day.
The Trustees say they would like to congratulate the Government, architect, contractors and project team for the works carried out on this major project. The Trust says that the original structure of the building has been “very carefully incorporated in the design making full use of existing details.”
“The beautiful facades have,” says the Trust, “been sympathetically renovated maintaining their striking aspect.”
Although the Trust accepts that many features have had to be added to comply with current patient care requirements, these have been carried out “in a subtle way respecting the overall look of the buildings, and for the most part are reversible should there be the need to do so.”
The Trust feels that this is “an excellent example of how existing high profile buildings can be given a new lease of life by applying appropriate consideration to its heritage value.”
In this case, a historically important complex of buildings has been retained and refurbished to provide an essential service to our community. It is an example, concludes the Trust, of what can be achieved when all entities work together to retain a building in a sustainable way.
