Feb 23 - History Society Rejects Government Northern Defences Development

northern defences The Gibraltar History Society has expressed concern over the Government’s refurbishment of the Northern Defences. They claim that the plan ‘completely ignores their heritage value’, and is not based on informed advice on the cultural value of the area, as a preserved system of fortifications and their significance in Gibraltar’s history.

The last Development and Planning Commission meeting held last week discussed the proposal to demolish part of the wall for plans to develop a pedestrianised route through the city’s walls.

The group insists that the Government did not consult outside advisors and that the DPC ‘decided not to call them and thus avoided a proper debate based on facts. Yet, this project was presented to the forum for guidance!’

The group calls on the Government to cease ‘this misguided action’, asking for a debate to be held on the proposed development of the defences.
