Mar 12 - Minister Sacramento Attends United Nations Commission On The Status Of Women

The Minister for Equality, Samantha Sacramento, is once again attending the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The CSW is instrumental in promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women. The UN Women's focus is on priority areas that are fundamental to the equality of women and supports all aspects of the Commission’s work. The theme this year is ‘Implementing the Beijing Platform for Action’ and the Commission will be reviewing progress 20 years after its adoption. The Platform for Action covers 12 critical areas of concern that continue to be relevant today: violence, education and training, health, human rights, the girl child, power and decision making, poverty, economy, media, environment, institutional mechanisms and armed conflict.

The Minister is attending with the UK delegation of MPs and a full programme of activities. She is being accompanied by Natalie Tavares, Head of Children's Services Social Services and Private Secretary Sabina Guillem.

“The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action of 1995 continues to be a source of guidance to realise gender equality and human rights for women and girls and as the first Minister for Equality I am delighted to once again be attending the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women and further demonstrate our Government's commitment to further the gender equality agenda," said Minister Sacramento.
