Mar 12 - Crossing Countdown Timer Launched on Line Wall Road
Minister for Traffic, Paul Balban today unveiled the first of a series of countdown timer systems for traffic light crossings. Forming part of the Draft Sustainable Traffic, Transport and Parking Pilot scheme, the first system, launched at the ever-busy crossing on Line Wall Road by City Hall, counts down the seconds left of crossing time, eliminating the flashing amber light sequence for vehicles.
The timer provides pedestrian users a visual countdown of the time remaining for safe crossing before the traffic lights continue the cycle to allow vehicular movement. This is the first of its kind to be installed in Gibraltar, despite it being common in many cities across the World. Minister Balban commented on the immense sense of satisfaction the initiative gave him, noting that the ‘new countdown timer toucan crossing that should make crossing much safer for pedestrians and benefit road users.’
