Mar 19 – Unite Criticizes GGCA Leadership's “Ageism U-Turn”

Unite the Union says it feels that it “beggars belief” that the GGCA executive would seek to manipulate the community into believing that they have somehow campaigned for the non-discrimination of employees over the age of 65 when, in reality, according to Unite, “they were pursuing an ageist policy of denying Mr Tampin his rights to access the Industrial Tribunal.”

Unite says that any organisation that claims to be representative of the interests of the working person would, out of principle, discard the possibility of discriminating on the basis of age, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or nationality whether legislated or not. Unite argues says that the take home message in the circumstances of Mr Tampin and the GGCA leadership is that they would still pursue their ageist policy if provisions against it did not exist under EU Law.

Unite says that the GGCA membership “deserves a better leadership” than that of one that have to undertake 180 degree U-turns in the last opportunity “given their misguided and discriminatory agenda”. This follows, according to Unite, a “complete mishandling of the situation” since Mr Tampin was ousted from his position when the GGCA executive made Mr Tampin redundant. Unite says that this is “another black mark” against the Gibraltar General and Clerical Association Executive.
