Mar 19 - Professor Daniella Tilbury Appointed University Of Gibraltar Vice-Chancellor

The Government says it is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Daniella Tilbury as Vice Chancellor (designate) of the University of Gibraltar.

Daniella Tilbury is the first female Gibraltarian to hold the full university title of Professor. She has over 25 years’ experience as a higher education professional and is currently a senior manager at the University of Gloucestershire, UK. She has held academic and leadership positions at the University of Cambridge, University of Hong Kong. Macquarie University, Sydney and is a Visiting Professor at universities in Spain, Canada and South Africa.

Professor Tilbury was recognised in 2009, as a Marie Curie Fellow, by the European Commission for her contribution to research. She is Fellow of the Leadership Trust and a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts. She has contributed to over 100 books and referenced articles and has given keynote addresses in conferences across the globe. Most significantly, she was a keynote speaker at the UN's World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg 2002) and at several UN higher profile events over the last 1o years. She served as the UK government’s nominee on the United Nations Economic Council for Europe (UNECE) Expert Groups on competences (and indicators) until 2014.

Professor Tilbury has substantial experience as a higher education advisor supporting the establishment of new universities as well as innovative ventures in this sector. She has assessed strategic higher education initiatives and conducted feasibility studies for government agencies in Australia, New Zealand, China, Europe and North Africa.


In 2012, Professor Tilbury was appointed by the Government of Gibraltar to conduct a feasibility study on the new University. She has subsequently served as an advisor to the Government on the University project.

Professor Tilbury will take up her appointment on 11 August 2015 in time for the opening of the University in September.

Professor Tilbury said:

‘I am honoured, and at the same time, humbled, by this appointment. As a Gibraltarian, I am excited by the multiple benefits the University will bring to our community. Through professional and international partnerships, this new institution can also strengthen core economic activity and engage us in the global knowledge economy. Whilst not wishing to underestimate the challenge of establishing an internationally respected University, I am confident that we can build academic and research excellence over a short period. I look forward to the University opening its doors this September.’

The Minister for Education, Gilbert Licudi, said:

“Daniella has been instrumental in advising the Government on the University and in shaping its structure. I am delighted that she has accepted the appointment as Vice-Chancellor (designate). I am particularly pleased that the first Vice Chancellor of the University will be a Gibraltarian. Daniella brings a wealth of experience in higher education and enjoys wide recognition around the world for her work in this area.”
