Jun 18 - MOD Work Experience For Bayside Students

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) recently offered a number of year 10 students a variety of work experience placements.

Command Secretary Simon Argyle explained the benefits for both the student and the MOD, he said:

“I think work experience is incredibly useful, from my perspective it really gives young people a flavour for the type of career options and opportunities available to them. The MOD is still a big employer in Gibraltar; we offer a variety of roles across a wide range of functions. We want to open the doors to young people and even open their eyes to what we have to offer. It can show students that the MOD could be a good career choice for them or indeed that their career path lies elsewhere.”

Students from Bayside have been working with the Defence Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS), the Royal Gibraltar Regiment (RG) and the Motor Transport (MT) Section.

Three students working with DFRS were given the opportunity to test their new-found knowledge when they tackled a blaze on the Fire Training Simulator.  Mathew Lopez, Shane Martinez and Dion Durante all worked together to put the fire out under the watchful eye of their instructors. Tackling the fire with the intense heat radiating off it, in full protective clothing, gave the students a real insight into the difficulties faced by Firefighters, Matthew said:

“It was a lot harder to do than I thought, the hose is so heavy and the clothes are so hot; it really is very difficult to move and the heat is unbelievable.”

The RG hosted 20 students from Bayside. The Regimental Recruiting Team gave the students an insight into all of the career roles available to them and they were given hands on experience at Buffadero Training Centre with the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team. The students were also given a tunnel tour and shown where the Regiment conduct Tunnel Warfare Training. The week culminated in a variety of physical training activities including a paintball battle.

Jordan Wilde and Kadrian Gomez spent their work experience week with the MT Section. The students were given a full tour of the workshop and a basic introduction to vehicle mechanics. Jordan explained why he thought Work Experience was so beneficial, he said:

“Sometimes it’s hard to decide what you want to be when you are older, so it’s good to have a chance to try something for a week. I’ve decided that I definitely want to join the Army but it was to good learn how to take a carburettor apart.”
