Jul 02 - University Of Gibraltar Formally Established By Act Of Parliament

The Minister with responsibility for Education, Gilbert Licudi, has commenced the University of Gibraltar Act and appointed The University of Gibraltar Limited as the initial governing authority for the University. The University is therefore now formally established as a statutory body.

This is the latest step in bringing to fruition the landmark event that will be the opening of the University of Gibraltar’s doors to students in September of this year.

The Government initially incorporated The University of Gibraltar Limited as the corporate vehicle through which the University would be delivered and so as to engage staff and enter into contracts, including for the construction works at the Europa Point site. As Minister Licudi set out during the Parliamentary debate on the University of Gibraltar Bill, it had always been the intention to designate The University of Gibraltar Limited as the initial governing authority under the Act so that the University itself could start to function in the lead-up to its inauguration in September.

Minister Licudi said: “This is another proud moment in this project. The University is now established and the whole team continues to work tirelessly in all aspects of the University to make this venture the success that it is set to be."
