Jul 09 - Italian Maths Lesson For Westside School Pupils

Today marks the end of the school year for students across Gibraltar, and in the run up to the summer holidays the Mathematics Department have provided alternative ways of learning for students at Westside school.

Louise Santos and Pie Sanchez, both teachers at Westside, prepared a lesson plan and taught a mathematics lesson in Italian.

The lesson aim was to teach Tarsia Puzzles to year 9 students, rounding the answers off to the nearest number. Immersion in the language was complete and the teachers did not use English to teach, guide or explain the tasks at hand.

Pie was the language expert and Louise the mathematician. They said the students did not know that they were going to be taught in Italian beforehand so it was amazing to see their reaction.

The majority of students succeeded in completing their puzzles demonstrating that it is entirely possible to carry out a cross curricular activity if it is prepared and planned well. It also proves that there should be no barriers in education: mathematics is an ancient universal language; it is simply the language of numbers and symbols.

Maths students have also taken their own initiative at running their own recycling drive, and have cleared a year's worth of accumulated papers in time for the summer break.
