Jul 15 - GSLA Accessible Swimming Pool Re-Opens

After undergoing an extensive refurbishment programme the Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority Accessible Swimming Pool will re-open its doors to the public tomorrow Thursday 16th July at 10am. Works to the facility, that will be officially re-opened by the Steven Linares, the Minister for Sport, include :-

        -  Re-tiling/re-surfacing of all changing areas and corridors

         -  Re-modelling of changing areas to provide extra changing space/benches

         -  Installation of new lockers

         -  Repairs and amendments to shower areas

         -  Repairs to poolside showers

         -  Repairs to major plumbing and drainage issues

         -  General painting and aesthetic improvements.

The pool now boasts a new mobile hoist plus a ceiling fitted hoist on tracks in the accessible changing room. Two new wheelchairs have also been procured and these are designed to be partly submerged in order to facilitate access to the pool. Showers cubicles now also have support bars with the poolside access door replaced and adapted to open in both directions solving a recurrent issue for wheelchair users.

The final part of the project has seen the installation of photovoltaic panels to provide hot water to the changing facilities as well as providing power to maintain and regulate the water temperature in the swimming pool. This will not only have its economic benefits but will also reduce the carbon footprint of the facility as the need for diesel fuel is now only required as a back-up option. An air exchange / dehumidifier unit will be installed shortly and this will provide a comfortable and safe environment within the facility. All infrastructure work is completed and the dehumidifier should arrive imminently. The facility’s retractable roof will allow the re-opening of the pool whilst this final phase is completed and will enable the public to enjoy the upgraded facilities.
