Jul 21 - Gibraltar Mothers To Hold Their Own Big Latch On Event

Thousands of breastfeeding women and babies across the world will mark World Breastfeeding Week starting on 1st August, and mothers in Gibraltar are organising their own Big Latch On event to mark the occasion.
The local Big Latch On will take place at Cafe Solo, Casemates at 10am Saturday 1st August as part of a world-wide synchronised breastfeeding event.

The first big Latch On took place in Aotearoa New Zealand in 2005 and was introduced to Portland, Oregon in 20910 by Joanne Edwards. It has now taken off globally and in 2014 31 different countries were recorded with 826 different locations. 13,798 infants were latched on and 23,906 people took part, and mothers in Gibraltar are proud to add to these numbers.

Tamsin Suarez, organiser of the event explained: "Breastfeeding is the perfect food for babies. It contributes to the normal growth and development of babies/children. It reduces the risk of allergies, asthma, ear infections and tummy upsets and babies/children who are not breastfed are at increased risk of infant morbidity and mortality, adult obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and premenopausal breast and ovarian cancer (both mum and baby).
"The World Health Organisation recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a babies life to optimize these benefits, continuing to breastfeed for 2 years and as long as thereafter as is mutually desired by a woman and her child."

Everyone is invited to this event to celebrate mums and babies.  The babies are latched on for 1 minute and mums can do this either openly or with a breastfeeding cover.  They then have the opportunity to have some beautiful photos and fun with the other families.

As from 10.30am there will be a fun day with a bouncy castle, fun photos, fish the ducks, stalls and much more.
