Jul 23 - Private Viewing Of Nazi Documentary Shown At Leisure Cinemas

A private viewing of the German Concentration Camps Factual Survey was shown in King’s Bastion Leisure Cinemas, on request of the Chief Minister Fabian Picardo.

Dignitaries and members from Gibraltar’s Jewish community, including Chief Rabbi Roni Hassid and President James Levy, attended the private viewing of the documentary yesterday evening, followed by a reception.

This documentary was initially produced by Sidney Bernstein, and features footage filmed by the Allied Forces in Nazi concentration camps in 1945.

It was shelved for 70 years before restoration director Dr Toby Haggith and his Imperial War Museum colleagues Holocaust learning officer Rachel Donnelly and restoration editor George Smith alongside historical advisor Dr Jeremy Hicks, author/former inmate of Bergen-Belsen professor Peter Lantos, Sidney Bernstein’s daughter Jane Wells and Sidney Bernstein’s son David released the newly restored film.

This was followed by a short film made by young people from the Learning from Auschwitz charity.

Stephen Cumming, technical manager at Leisure Cinemas, explained they brought the documentary to Gibraltar by special request from the Government.
