Oct 16 – Monthly Open Backgammon Meetings Launched

Following the successful launch of the Backgammon Association of Gibraltar, the success in achieving membership of the European Backgammon Federation, and the popular National Day Competition, the first of a regular series of monthly open backgammon meetings will be held at Latinos Casemates on Wednesday 28th October starting at 7.30pm.

The Association says that it hopes to be able to use the full size international standard boards as well as the official competition timing systems recently acquired by the Association by the Caleta Hotel. The Association says it is “very grateful” for these.

One of the conditions of membership of the European Federation is that all member nations implement a player ranking system complying with their international standards under a format similar to international chess. The Association says this will be explained on the day and put into operation as soon as possible thereafter, for those members who are interested.

A fee of £5 per player will be charged for these open sessions for as many games as may be possible to play on the night.

All games will be played to international rules and winners will be players who manage to achieve seven points.

The Association also plans to hold quarterly tournaments: the first will be before Christmas and the qualifying tournament for the International backgammon Competition organised by the Caleta Hotel, with the support of the Association, will be held in February. Dates will be announced shortly.

All backgammon players are invited to attend these open sessions and tournaments, although ranking will only be available to registered members.

Membership application forms will be available on the night (£5 fee up to March 2016, £10 per annum thereafter).
