Dec 16 – “Currently No Change” To Number Of Local Clubs Competing In European Football – GFA

Following on from reports in various local media outlets, the Gibraltar FA has said it would like to clarify the exact position in relation to the places that are available for Gibraltarian clubs in the two European competitions: the Champions League and the Europa League.

In 2013 UEFA granted Gibraltar two places in in its club competitions: one team participating in the UEFA Champions League and one in the UEFA Europa League.

Entry into these competitions for the 2017-18 season will be a matter for discussion at the next meeting of the UEFA Club Competitions Committee, in February 2016. Following on from this, formal approval on places and entry for the 2017-18 season will only be confirmed at the end of the 2015-16 season (which is this current season).

Therefore, the GFA says that, until the UEFA Club Competitions Committee meets in February and once formal confirmation is received at the end of the 2015-16 season, there is currently no change to the number of Gibraltarian Club teams that can qualify for any of the two European Competitions, no matter what the current UEFA Coefficient Ranking stands at.

The Gibraltar FA says that, as and when there is any change to the position, it will communicate this accordingly.
