Feb 16 - Backgammon Association Congratulates Caleta Hotel And Championship Organisers
The Backgammon Association of Gibraltar has congratulated the Caleta Hotel and its organising team for the “very successful” Gibraltar Backgammon Championships held at the hotel from 11th to 14th February.
A statement from the association continued: “It was indeed a fantastic experience for both the very prominent visiting players and for the local players who ventured on their first ever official international tournament.
“The Association wishes to take this opportunity to thank the sponsors of the event and the Caleta Hotel for having agreed to allow the four top local players in our recent qualifying tournament free access to the intermediate level of the Championships.
“The fifteen local players who entered the competition performed extremely well given the circumstances. Although no players made the cut into the main draw, a few by very narrow losses, of the intermediate event (needing to win at least four out of the first six games in that round with 51 players enrolled) four local players made the last 16 (out of 32) in the consolation (plate) competition, two of whom made it to the quarter finals, and one: the current Gibraltar Champion and winner of the qualifiers, Stewart Stone; reached the semi-final narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
“The Association considers, therefore, that the participation of the local players was very fruitful in results, contacts made and particularly the experience gained for future competitions and looks forward with great expectations to the next edition of the Gibraltar International Backgammon Championships which will be held at the Caleta Hotel from 8th to 12th February 2017”
The Association’s weekly meetings and rating matches (Wednesdays as from 7.30pm at Latinos Casemates) will resume as from 17th February 2016.
