Nineteen athletes from Special Olympics Gibraltar arrived in Abu Dhabi last Friday in preparation for the the World Summer Games 2019 which  takes place this Thursday.

A spokesperson for Special Olympics Gibraltar said: "After their long journey over, the team have had a few days to acclimatise, train and rest. In their host 'town' of Dubai the team were accommodated in a central hotel and entertained by the local organising committee.

"On the day they arrived there was time for the team to visit the Dubai Mall, one of the largest in the World, and to see the various sights, including the tallest building in the World, the Burj Khalifa.

"This was followed by a trip to the theme park of Motiongate on Saturday where they enjoyed time on the numerous rides available.

"On Sunday the team were taken to the Wellington International School to meet some of the students and participate in playing games with them. This was followed by all 4,000 athletes in Dubai gathering together at the Global Village for closing entertainment with the torch run, cultural performances and entertainment.

"The team now split up to go to the hotels closer to their respective sporting venues where they will be for the duration of the games, and a couple of days serious training before the Opening Ceremony on Thursday."
