Feb 23 - Gibraltar Euro 2016 Qualifiers Draw – Full Details
Gibraltar will face Germany, Georgia, Scotland, Poland and the Republic of Ireland in Group D of the qualifying rounds for the Euro 2016 football championships.
National squad team members watched the draw which was shown live at the Rock Hotel. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo was also there to show his support for UEFA’s newest member.
Gibraltar Drew Spain
In an unexpected twist, Gibraltar was initially drawn to play in Spain’s group (Group C) but the team was automatically moved to the next group (Group D) which was headed by Germany. The move took place in accordance with a previous UEFA agreement that the two teams would not face each other as a result of any draws.
Speaking at the Rock Hotel earlier this afternoon, team captain Roy Chipolina said that he was thrilled that the team would be facing some of the giants of European football. He was also excited by the prospect of facing Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.
