Apr 01 - Special Olympics Swimmers Return

Special Olympics Gibraltar swimmers arrived today triumphant after their participation in the Princess Charlene Swimming Meeting which was held in Monaco. 28 European countries and South Africa competed in a two-day event.

Malcolm Miel was the first to swim in his 25m freestyle. He achieved a Bronze medal.

Malcolm did a wonderful race in the 25m backstroke. From 4th place at the start he swam strongly and eventually took silver in this event. Alfred Celecia took a well-deserved Bronze in his 25 m freestyle. He came in 4th in the 25m breaststroke.

The revelation of the tournament was Daniel Gavito swimming hard and managing to achieve Gold in the 50m breaststroke.

In his second event freestyle he again engaged in neck-to-neck competition which got him in 1st position.

Technically he was well prepared and his turn was faultless earning him those extra seconds needed to achieve the Gold.

The opening ceremony was held in the Stade Louis 11 stadium with the presence of Princess Charlene. The Percussion Centre Jeuenesse Princesse Stephanie of Monaco had all athletes dancing and moving to the beat of the drums.

The programme in Monaco serves over 70 athletes with 20 coaches so the similarity between Gibraltar and Monaco has always created a good friendship over the years.
