queens baton This weekend Gibraltar will host the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay. The baton arrives from Malta the 65th of its 71 Commonwealth destinations with Europe the 6th and final rotation before the Games this summer.  Gibraltar will provide an integral link in welcoming the baton as part of the most engaging relay in history. The baton is currently travelling through Cyprus and will be met by Miss Gibraltar 2013 Maroua Kharbouch on Saturday morning in Casemates Square. From there it will proceed to the Bayside Sports Complex.

The route will include a host of sports whilst at the complex before continuing on its journey towards Waterport and around the Europort area. The baton will reach Referendum Gates around noon and then head back towards Casemates where it will be met by Gibraltar Commonwealth Games Association President Charlie Flower.

The Queen’s Baton relay is the traditional kick off for Commonwealth Games, and has been an inclusion in the Games program since the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Game in Wales.

As part of its epic journey, the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay will have travelled the length and breadth of the Commonwealth, visiting all 71 nations and covering 190,000 Kilometers in 248 days. The baton will be presented back to Her Majesty The Queen at the Opening Ceremony of the 2014 Games in Glasgow on the 23rd July.

In Gibraltar, the passing through of the baton will be highlighted with a Radio roadshow, performances in Casemates Square by Urban dance and the Gibraltar Sea Scouts Band.
