May 09 - Gibraltar to Host 17th Strait Games

news With another year brings another edition of the Strait Games. The 2014 initiative, to be held in Gibraltar, was officially launched by His Worship the Mayor Adolfo Canepa yesterday afternoon at a presentation also attended by the Mayor of San Roque and the Vice Consejero of Ceuta.

Each year many youngsters participate in the sports event, from around the Campo de Gibraltar and Ceuta and Melilla. Speaking at the launch, held at the King’s Bastion Leisure Centre, the Mayor pushed the theme of perseverance, with the games bringing people together since 1998. Gibraltar has formerly held the event 3 times.  His Worship insisted that these events cut through political differences further fuses human relations, which is what the games are all about.

The logo for this year’s event highlights the beacon to the Strait of Gibraltar, the Gibraltar lighthouse. Events for Games include athletics, basketball, badminton, canoeing, chess, five a side, football, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby, sailing, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon and waterpolo. The Games will run from 30th – 31st May.

Venus will include Devils Tower Camp, GASA swimming hall, the Royal Yacht Club, the Victoria Stadium Sports Hall and the sports hall at St. Anne’s School.
