Sep 24 - GSD Writes To Football Clubs About Stadium Plans
The GSD has sent a letter to all local football clubs explaining its position on the proposed Europa Point stadium and its plans to upgrade Victoria Stadium to a Category Four facility.
The letter starts by re-affirming the party’s support for UEFA level international football in Gibraltar. Although the party recognizes the importance of hosting home games on the Rock, it rejects the Europa Point stadium proposals because they go against the wishes of “thousands of people.” The GSD letter says that going ahead with the development has the potential to cause a “huge backlash” which would not be in the interests of football in Gibraltar.
As an alternative to the Europa Point stadium, the GSD proposes to upgrade the current Victoria Stadium site into a Cat 3 and then, eventually, a Cat 4 stadium. The party explains to the local football clubs that the restarted runway tunnel works and its own education policy would make more space available at the site for any necessary expansion.
While admitting that it is likely that these works would not be funded by UEFA, the letter argues that Victoria Stadium is the ideal place for extra training facilities to help football develop locally at a grassroots level.
