Aug 20 - Netball Summer Camp Success

For the first time in many summers Netball was on the Summer Sports & Leisure Programme 2015 for juniors and it was a great success.

For two weeks the Gibraltar Netball Association held the summer sports programme for children aged 5-12. The camp was organised by Nadine Pardo-Zammit, Committee member of the Gibraltar Netball Association and the sessions were led by Lizanne Pardo-Gomez, Sports Science teacher with a wealth of experience as Assistant Coach of the Gibraltar Netball Senior Squad. She was assisted by 13 of Gibraltar's young key netball players who devoted their time and patience to helping the younger ones develop their skills. The Gibraltar Netball Association would like to express a big thank you to: Lizanne Pardo-Gomez, Zoe Borge, Grace Payas, Julie-Anne Bellingan, Tiana Zammit, Anna Hernadez, Chloe Hernadez, Elizabeth Rigby, Rachel Rigby, Isabella Macquisten, Louise Rodriguez, Megan Prescott, Siobhan Gregory, Nadiushka Gavito and Katherine Garner. The GNA also wishes to thank Gibtelecom for their kind sponsorship donation.

Review by Katherine Garner Netball Camp volunteer:

During the first few sessions the aim was to introduce basic netball skills such as passing and shooting. Once the children had mastered these, we introduced a game called "end ball" which slowly introduced attacking and defending skills along with basic netball rules. This encouraged the children to think about where they were passing to so as not to give the ball to the other team and also to try and get interceptions whilst defending.

Umpiring was also introduced, thereby teaching the children to focus on avoiding footwork, obstruction and contact during play. Whilst umpiring, the children were taught by some of our experienced women's league umpires which hand signals to use if they saw any rules being broken by the on court players. They also had the important job of controlling the starting and stopping of the game.

During the final sessions, the entry game of netball called "High 5" was played. It includes five players on court, and up to four off-court roles such as scoring and time keeping. An important part of this game is rotating on and off positions often, therefore allowing the children to experience every position, and makes for fitter more adaptable players as they get older.

The sessions had a large turn out and were a great introduction to netball. They also allowed the children to have fun, get active, learn the importance of team work and make new friends. There is definitely a bright future for netball in Gibraltar with some of these future upcoming players.
