Jan 29 - Gibraltar Students Take On The CyberCenturion Challenge

Four teams of Bayside and Westside students are spending this evening competing in the CyberCenturion Schools Challenge against stiff competition from 42 teams in schools across the UK.

The Gibraltar contingent was doing well so far with one team in first position and another in the top five.

CyberCenturion is the UK arm of the Cyber Patriot competition in the US, organised by Northrop Grumman.

The competition is designed to inspire young people towards careers in cyber security helping build a bigger cyber talent pool.

The tasks involve identifying vulnerabilities in different networks and erecting added protection and safety features to ward off cyber attacks.

The teacher responsible for this initiative is Mr Stewart Harrison, the school's Head of Physics (pictured below).

He told YGTV: “Their task is to secure different networks and in each round they’re given three different systems which they need to keep the hackers out of.”

Mr Harrison says he’s eager to repeat last year’s success when a local team came fifth overall.

Results from all competitions are due in on Sunday evening with the top teams moving on to the finals of the competition.
