WhatsApp, the hugely popular messaging service used by thousands in Gibraltar, will now require iOS users to pay a $1 annual subscription fee.

Launched in 2009, the free messaging service boasts 10 billion messages sent and 17 billion received on an average day. It initially required a one-off app purchase fee for iOS users who will now join the same subscription system which applies to other platforms like Android and BlackBerry.

According to techcrunch.com, the company recently said it was bigger than Twitter.
