As the new football season approaches, the Gibraltar Football Association have announced a selection of friendly matches and competitive fixtures for Gibraltar’s teams. The first of which will take place the Victoria Stadium on 5th March 2014, against the Estonian national team. A further friendly with the team will he held in Tallinn, Estonia on 26th May. A GFA statement today claims that ‘negotiations are also on-going regarding the possibility of two international friendly fixtures in Gibraltar in November 2013 and March 2014 against two fellow UEFA national associations. Further information on this will be issued soon’.
UEFA has approached the GFA about the possibility of hosting a four-team tournament in the summer of 2014. The proposed mini-tournament would feature the women’s national “A” teams from Gibraltar, Andorra, San Marino and Liechtenstein. More information on the tournament will be issued in due course.
Moreover, the Men’s National Futsal Team will play a friendly against the Polish FA in a four-team tournament in Krakow. Other teams participating will include Turkey and Belarus. This will take place between the 15th and 20th November this year.
Gibraltar’s U-19 national team will depart next week, bound for Sofia, Bulgaria where they will play an international U-19 friendly against Bulgaria on the 11th October. The team will then travel to Ostrava in the Czech Republic to participate in Group 1 of the Qualifying Round of the UEFA European U-19 Championship. Gibraltar will begin with a match against Croatia on the 17th October, before playing the hosts Czech Republic on the 19th October. The final match will be against Cyprus on the 22nd October. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Elite Round alongside the third-placed team with the best record against the top pair in their group
The U-17 team will participate in Group 7 of the Qualifying Round of the UEFA European U-17 Championship, in Yerevan, Armenia, at the end of the month. Gibraltar will begin with a match against the Republic of Ireland on the 24th October, before playing England on the 26th October. The final match is against the hosts Armenia on the 29th October. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Elite Round alongside the third-placed team with the best record against the top pair in their group.
