Editor's Blog Nov 11th 2011 - Poppies
An amazing fact it’s the 11/11/11 but it’s not really, its 2011, but you know how people love to get into numerology. Still it is significant; in so much as it is the day our forces poppy sellers take to the streets and if you haven’t got one already, you can buy one, lose it by lunchtime and buy another one or two before you get home. It’s the bloody pins - they don’t stay in. Still it is a day I’ve known all my life and watching the cenotaph parade in London as a child it somehow brings that pride in one’s country that is often sadly lacking in these modern times. Nothing like a good conflict to rally the troops I suppose.
In UK this morning, the news is full of the sad and disgraceful behaviour from the Muslim brotherhood or whatever they call themselves this week. Banned again, but UK government should go further and arrest them for gathering. They don’t think twice about bothering pensioners if they camp outside parliament for a day or two. It’s about time we stopped being so tolerant of those that just want to upset the balance of our society. Fine, live by your own ‘code’ but not by your laws Sharia or otherwise. Our laws are enshrined in our history, and it is important that those laws made by the people from the times of the Magna Carta are upheld and that is that, end of, no discussion and certainly no going back.
Speaking of poppies; it was also good to see that the England team will be allowed to wear the poppy symbol in the match against Spain this weekend. I believe FIFA knew this was a dangerous game they were playing with the nation that gave the world football and whether it was William, David Cameron or just plain common sense I applaud the decision.
Now all we need to do is whoop Spain’s butt.
