Environmental Agency Completes City Centre Rodent-Control Cycle

The Environmental Agency has completed its latest proactive rodent-control treatment cycle across Gibraltar’s city centre, including the sewage network, utility service manholes, public access points and high-footfall areas.

A statement from the Government follows below:

The Environmental Agency has completed its latest proactive rodent-control treatment cycle across Gibraltar’s city centre, including the sewage network, utility service manholes, public access points and high-footfall areas. This work forms part of the Agency’s year -round pest-management programme, which targets rodents and other urban pests to safeguard public health. This follows the previous full treatment cycle carried out in October–November 2025, reflecting the Agency’s structured, year-round approach to pest management.

The Agency also confirmed that ongoing treatments are being carried out across Government rental estates, with scheduled visits to internal and external communal areas, refuse points, bin stores, drainage chambers and service corridors. These estates are treated on a rotating basis to ensure consistent coverage and early detection of pest activity.

Rodent control in Gibraltar is undertaken proactively, not only in response to public reports. The Environmental Agency routinely treats the sewage network in public areas, including the town centre, as part of its structured pest-control strategy. Known hot-spots such as certain rocky revetments and green areas are monitored and treated when required using appropriate rodenticide and special tamper-resistant boxes to safeguard pets and wild animals. This work is supported by public-facing information campaigns through the Agency’s social media channels, encouraging residents to report sightings and maintain good waste-management practices.

Recent international reports of hantavirus have prompted public concern in many jurisdictions. Public Health Gibraltar has assessed the current risk to Gibraltar as low, but both agencies continue to work closely to ensure early monitoring and rapid response where required.

The Agency is also continuing its routine seasonal treatments for cockroaches, which typically increase during the warmer months.

The Minister for the Environment, Dr John Cortes, welcomed the work: “The Environmental Agency’s pest- control programme is one of those essential but often unseen services that protect our community every day. The completion of the city- centre cycle, together with ongoing work in Government estates, demonstrates the Agency’s commitment to maintaining high public -health standards. I thank the officers for their professionalism and for the continuous work they carry out across Gibraltar.”

Residents are encouraged to support this work by securing waste in closed bags and containers, avoiding feeding birds or animals in ways that attract rodents and reporting any rodent sightings directly to the Environmental Agency.
