The Government has today issued advice for elderly and frail residents following an increase in attendances at Accident and Emergency yesterday involving falls, as a result of severe weather conditions.

The Government has emphasised that support is available for those who may require assistance with essential needs and who have absolutely no alternative support from family members, friends or neighbours.

Elderly or vulnerable individuals who require help with essentials such as urgent prescription/medication and who have no other option available to them are advised to call 111 in the first instance. The service will be able to assess needs and provide appropriate guidance or support.

The Care Agency is also proactively contacting individuals on its risk register who are considered to be at the highest risk. These welfare checks are being carried out to ensure that vulnerable residents are safe and aware of the help available to them.

The Government has reminded residents and carers to take extra care during periods of severe weather, particularly where conditions may increase the risk of slips or falls, and encouraged family members, neighbours and the wider community to check in on elderly or frail individuals where possible.

The Minister for Health and Care, Gemma Arias-Vasquez, said: “Our priority is the safety and wellbeing of our elderly and most vulnerable residents. Severe weather can significantly increase the risk of falls, particularly for those who are frail or living alone. If someone genuinely has no family or other support available and needs help with essentials, they should not hesitate to call 111 so that support can be arranged. At the same time, the Care Agency is actively reaching out to those at highest risk to carry out welfare checks. I would also encourage everyone to look out for elderly neighbours and relatives, as simple checks can make a real difference.”
